India, July 2015. In a move to revolutionise school education, Government of India launches eBasta, a digital library of downloadable school books on July 1, 2015. HR ministry's release states that e-Basta is a portal for authorized school teachers to compile course material, textbooks, and e-books as per a school's preferences, for each class. The e-Basta can be made to suit the prescribed books/resources of schools, as per the syllabus of their school board or school specific requirements, added the release.

The portal was jointly developed with the Department of Electronics and Information Technology's Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his office is personally monitoring the preparation and implementation of the projects.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), which facilitates the digital library, has also designed an application that can be run on any Android device. Ebooks on this portal are free as well as with a price tag.

According to information sourced by Times of India, "eBasta is an e-resource portal. The app will enable one to download e-textbooks, lectures and practical videos, and audio files, store them and access them on phones, tablets or computers even when internet connectivity is not available. The idea is to bring publishers, free as well as commercial, and schools to come together. Schools on this platform can create structured resources. For students it will reduce the burden of physical books and easy access to structured resources created by schools."

e-Basta has a repository of 329 textbooks, in ebook format, sourced from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), for 1 to 12 classes. The text books are available in Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit and English languages.

How it works

The portal is user friendly catering to the requirements of publisher, teacher, and the student community.

Publishers can upload content with metadata covering class, subject, language, price, preview, and pages. Publishers can also view the comments and ratings produced by the users of the portal.

Authorized teachers can browse the e-contents uploaded by various publishers, and create syllabus. The same can be accessed by the students to download.

Advantage students

Students who bear the brunt of carrying heavy textbooks, this news is going to give a big relief. This move will also popularise the use of smart applications for learning by reducing the paper work.

Since users can post comments and ratings, this is sure to improve the quality in content as publishers will be forced to respond to the ratings.
