Affra Schools, a Pre-School, LKG, UKG at Chakka in Trivandrum. THE GENESIS OF EXCELLENCE BEGINS AT AFFRA SCHOOLS. A PROJECT UNDERTAKEN BY AFFRA EUROPE. We believe that more in Kindergarten learning will occur if the student has a desire to learn, has positive feelings concerning his/her school environment, and succeeds in his/her work. A comfortable atmosphere of caring and acceptance established by the school is considered important, so that each student is encouraged to strive for excellence and to be creative. An aesthetically pleasing environment with a view to appreciation of beauty and order enhances this. Each Preschool student’s possibility of success increases when he/she works at the appropriate level of difficulty and senses positive expectations from his/her teachers.

The six essential units contain the following components:

Literacy/Language, Mathematics, Science/Social Studies/Health, Gross Motor Development, Fine Motor Development, Fine Arts, Social/Emotional Development and Independent/Self Help.

For each theme, there are activities for each component listed above. There is also a list of quality books and a theme poster for each theme.

There are enough activities to last for at least a year. They can be repeated any number of times and can be used with older preschool children or those with special needs.

Program This program is designed to achieve the units through learning centers, small group activities, and large group activities involving hands on activities, which developmentally age appropriate.

Learning Centers: Learning Centers are well-defined areas in the classroom that promote independence, foster decision-making and encourage involvement. These centers are designed to provide opportunities for active and quiet play as well as encourage social skill development.

These centers/activity areas are house, block, art, Library, sand/water, outdoors, and puzzles (manipulatives). Other centers may be added throughout the school year based on the units and children’s interest. See the curriculum appendix for ideas for each center and materials that may be included.

Small-Group Activities: Small Group activities are specific activities in each unit that are best done in a small group environment (i.e. scissor skills). This allows for more student participation. Small group activities can take place at a table, on the floor, in the gym or outside. The teacher can be flexible in deciding what would best fit the essential units being taught.

Large Group Activities: Large Group activities can include circle time, whole class singing and dancing, story time and lunchtime.
